Tourism CS Rebecca Miano Visits Kenya Wildlife Service, Emphasizes Conservation and Staff Welfare

On August 21, 2024, Tourism and Wildlife Cabinet Secretary Rebecca Miano made her first official visit to the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) https://www.kws.go.ke/  headquarters. Her visit highlighted a strong commitment to supporting KWS’s vital role in wildlife conservation and recognizing the efforts of its dedicated staff.

During her visit, CS Miano expressed her deep appreciation for the hard work and sacrifice of KWS personnel, particularly the rangers who have lost their lives protecting Kenya’s wildlife. A poignant moment of the visit was the wreath-laying ceremony at the KWS Heroes Monument, honoring these fallen heroes.

Miano underscored the importance of wildlife conservation in driving Kenya’s economy and aligning with the government’s Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA). She praised KWS’s efforts, particularly the “Tunza Mali Yako” campaign, which promotes peaceful coexistence between communities and wildlife, reducing conflicts in areas near national parks.

Looking forward, Miano reiterated her commitment to improving staff welfare as part of the new KWS Strategic Plan, set to launch soon. She called for unity and integrity within KWS as they work towards enhanced conservation efforts.

The event also featured remarks from KWS leadership, including Director General Dr. Erustus Kanga, who emphasized the importance of the upcoming Strategic Plan (2024-2028) in guiding KWS’s future conservation goals and community impact.

The Karen Blixen Group stands with CS Miano in recognizing the importance of conservation and supporting the initiatives that ensure the safety and well-being of Kenya’s wildlife and those who protect it.
