Celebrating World Elephant Day

Every year, world Elephant Day is celebrated on 12^th August. The day was launched to bring attention to the urgent plight of Asian and African elephants. The elephant is loved, revered and respected by people and cultures around the world, yet we balance on the brink of seeing the last of this magnificent creature. At the turn of the 20th century, there were 10 million elephants in Africa but decades of poaching and habitat loss have taken a heavy toll on these smart, highly social creatures. Today just 415,000 remain.

The Mara Elephant Project in partnership with Karen Blixen Camp are determined to protect these magnificent creatures. Mara elephant project was established in 2011 and is a remarkable force of talented, dedicated and determined men and women working together 24/7 to save elephants for generations to come. The main mission is to protect the elephants and their habitats across the greater Mara ecosystem.
